In November 2015, 11 people came together to create the Basel GAA Gaelic Sports Club.
Five years on, October 10th 2020 saw 40 of our Basel GAA seniors and juniors celebrate our 5th anniversary. It was an historic meeting at the border between France and Switzerland, not least because our club members were standing pitch-side with their face masks on until the action kicked off.
The morning began with Niall and Len leading the Under 8 group in a session on Hurling skills, followed by a football game called ‘Rob the nest’ – all whilst being cheered on by their older siblings and friends.
Meanwhile, our Youth Officer Paul took the older kids through their paces with a Hurling skills session followed by a match. He was helped along by Shane, Sean, Larry, Brian, & Matthieu while the parents supported from the side lines.
The highlight of the event was the football game between our older youths and our seniors. Whilst the seniors took a quick lead with two goals, our young guns quickly answered with a few points. At half time, the seniors led by three points. But the second half saw the tables turn. Motivated by their coach, Paul, the team pulled together, and after captain, Sophia, and then Tomás, scored a few goals, the game finished up with a four-point victory for the kids.
The celebration continued at Paddy Reilly’s, Basel, where a special guest, John White, Secretary of the GGE, presented awards to the youth members and the coaches. Thanks John for coming along and encouraging our up and coming GAA members.
Membership of the club has been growing strongly in 2019/2020, and for the 2021 season the club plans to add an U10 youth group in addition to the existing U6/U8 and U12/U14 groups.
A big thanks to all Basel GAA members for your continued support of the club. Special thanks too, to our dedicated coaches, our enthusiastic committee and the GGE for your support.
Here’s to the next exciting five years as we continue to grow Basel GAA!
